Rubaiyat and Nepali Rubaiyat in Bhutan - Introduction

RUBAIYAT

The Rubaiyat is famous poetic genre of literature which has been practiced world widely. As it is a Persian form of several quatrains, it's origin is Middle East. Its name derives from the Arabic plural of the word for "quatrain," Rubá'íyah. This, in turn, comes from the Arabic Rubá, meaning "four." Singular form of Rubaiyat is Rubai (Web).

समाजको महाभारतलाई तोड्न सकुँ
जीन्दगीलाई असल मार्गतिर मोड्न सकुँ
सबैजना मिलेर समाज निर्माण गर्नु छ
मानवता भर्दै विश्वभरका मानिस जोड्न सकुँ

Form
The attributes of the Rubaiyat:
  1. This Persian form of poetry is a series of rhymed quatrains. In each quatrain, all lines rhyme except the third, leading to this pattern: A A B A
  2. An "Interlocking Rubaiyat" is a Rubaiyat where the subsequent stanza rhymes its 1st, 2nd, and 4th lines with the sound at the end of the 3rd line in the stanza (Rubá'íyah) before it. In this form, the 3rd line of the final stanza is also rhymed with the 3 rhymed lines in the first stanza.
  3. The lines are accentual-syllabic, usually tetrameters or pentameters.
  4. In Rubaiyat creation, every single quatrain (Rubai) will have its own specific beauty with central view point of expression, but there's no compulsion that all the Rubaiyats (if its written more than one) should focus on the same topic.
Examples of Rubaiyat.
These are some of the favorite quatrains from the “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam  translated by Edward Fitzgerald:

Wake! For the Sun who scattered into flight
The Stars before him from the Field of Night,
Drives Night along with them from Heaven and Strikes
The Sultan's Turret with a Shaft of Light.
                               [Stanza 1]
A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread -- and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness --
Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!
                              [Stanza 12]

The Moving Finger writes; and having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.
                              [Stanza 71]

Some for the glories of this world; and some
Sigh for The Prophet's Paradise to come;
Ah, take the cash and let the credit go,
Nor heed the rumble of a distant drum

For some we loved, the loveliest and best
That from His rolling vintage Time has pressed,
Have drunk their glass a round or two before,
And one by one crept silently to rest

Some examples of Nepali Rubaiyat:
